We're seeing the same issue. WordPress 4.4.2 with AD plugin version 1.1.8 running on CentOS 7. Active Directory server is 2012 R2. Operating system is configured to authenticate against AD server, so I know network connectivity between systems is valid. Not using TLS or LDAPS in our case. Checking domain controller ports fails consistently.

FIXED: SELinux was set to enforcing. Set to permissive and test worked.
